We are a group of people committed to turning Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple of Buddha's Light International Association (B.L.I.A) into a more sustainable place. We are planning to raise awareness of sustainability among the people who come to the Temple for Services, Children's Classes, Dharma discussion and cultural events. We are going to promote better recycling and water saving practices, and minimising use of plastic bags. We also intend to join other groups activities, such as Fair Trade Old Trafford and War on Waste Old Trafford, and plant some trees! We now have recycling bin scheme set up at the Temple. Old Trafford Council collects the bins weekly. Our young members will collect three Sustainability Pledges each by February 2007. On 26th of January 2008 11 of us joined Trees for Cities' Tree Planting at Cringle Fields Park, Levenshulme. Together with other volunteers, we planted 500 trees. At the Concert on 17 February 2008 we raised awareness of sustainability issues by distributing information about the group, Buddhist attitude to environment protection and about benefits of Vegan lifestyle among the audience. We also shared three Vegan poems with the members of audience. |
