PhD Positions, Sustainable Consumption Institute

A unique opportunity has arisen to become involved with exciting and pivotal sustainable development agenda research.

From September 2008 circa 10 PhD places will be available annually on a prestigious new interdisciplinary PhD programme.

Working with Tesco, The University of has established an innovative research institute where scholars are working at the interface between the worlds of business and society. The Institute’s research includes the following interdisciplinary themes in the context of sustainable consumption:

* Motivating customers towards greener lifestyles
* Carbon labeling
* Planning a greener future for retail
* Evaluation of new technologies
* Understanding the skills and staffing challenge
* Managing the implications of the rising cost of carbon
* Waste, recycling and packaging
* Climate change

As members of the SCI researcher community, successful candidates will undertake a rigorous and challenging year-long cross-disciplinary research training course as the first stage of an integrated PhD programme. Our aim is to develop an outstanding community of doctoral students whose research spans multiple disciplines. The training will includes a substantial emphasis on cross-disciplinary collaboration through effective communication, networking and team working. SCI doctoral graduates will be uniquely qualified to make contributions in many emerging areas of activity aligned with sustainable development.
