Note: The information below about this action group was correct when it was written, but may now be out of date, or the action group may no longer exist. This community group formed in July 2008 to save and safely manage the large tree at the corner of Ayres Road and Walter Street in Ayres Road. Concerned residents successfully raised over £500 during a two weeks period in August for emergency maintenance of the tree. Through hardwork, determination and reaching into their own pockets, residents raised nearly £1000 to have the tree professionally pruned, to ensure it many more years of life. The huge black poplar is the largest tree in Old Trafford, one of the most deprived ares in Great Britain. In relation to the rest of the borough of Trafford, Old Trafford is barren of trees and greenery -this tree being a remarkable exception -and thus it is doubly precious to residents who have so few trees around them. Phil Benn, Cert Arb (RFS) Mem SWA of ECOS ecological services completed emergency maintenance and pruning of the large poplar on Wednesday 8 October. It was a 12 hour day and involved closing Ayres Road and both pavements. The community greatly appreciates Mr. Benn's services and the tree gloriously remains a living Old Trafford landmark. Old Trafford Trees = Clean Ayre hopes to continue to campaign for more greeney in Old Trafford.
