Tea and cake in a welcoming social hub where things are remade, reused and recycled and people can find a role in their community.
Location: Fallowfield Methodist Community Church, Fallowfield, Corner of Platt Lane & Hart Road, , M14 7BU
Duration: December 2011 – present
Moss Side resident Becca Kind noticed the need for a hub in her local community – a place to meet, socialize and take part in group activities. The hub would appeal to young families, students, the elderly and the unemployed. Jo Wilkes, AfSL Co-ordinator, suggested Becca join the AfSL Local Project Manager training scheme to help her realise her idea.
Having found the perfect place at the nearby Fallowfield Methodist Community Church, Becca felt that the existing café could be improved, and took over the Friday morning slots. Becca held an open day to recruit volunteers, and the response was fantastic! Budding bakers agreed to supply the café with delicious cakes, and people volunteered to help run the café. With labour and resources donated, little fundraising was needed, and sales money is ploughed back into running the café.
Since its launch the café has been a great success. The play area and early opening times make it popular with parents, whereas the free WiFi, music and craft sessions have wider appeal. The local Wilbraham School has set up an English course at the church, with their students now using the café too. Becca has future plans for expansion, wanting to increase the number of operating days and to cater for new and diverse groups. For now, she has her hands full with a new baby, but watch this space….
