Setting the standard for sustainable housing
Location: Finchley Road, Fallowfield, M14
Duration: October 2011 – present
Sustainable Housing (SH) was founded by David Schofield in October 2011. Looking for a volunteering opportunity that suited his skills and interests, David came across Action for Sustainable Living’s Local Project Manager programme. Through AfSL and his co-ordinator Jo Wilkes, David received training and support enabling him to set up and manage his own project, and Sustainable Housing was born…Sustainable Housing is an experiment in sustainable student living where students will apply a sustainability filter to all aspects of domestic living from clothing, energy, finance, gardening, household cleaning and decorating, to food, recycling, transport and use of water.
Each house under the SH banner will be responsible for monitoring and developing a more sustainable approach to domestic living. The project has attracted interest from individuals and organisations. Regular volunteer meetings are held to shape the project and a solid team, mostly consisting of student volunteers, manages the finance, events, social media/blogs, photography, documentary production and marketing. After a few false starts, David has now identified a landlord on Finchley Road in Fallowfield who is fully supportive of the project and the first tenants will move in to two or three houses from June 2012.
Dubbed ‘The Good Life’, SH has had articles published in the South Reporter, Evening News and Climate Fortnightly.
