Plans are currently underway to conserve the woodland and fields around Hough End Clough located near the new Rugby stadium and the Hough End Centre. As part of this initiative a "Friends Group" has been formed by several local residents with the assistance and support of the local Chorlton & Whalley Range Parks and Leisure Officer John McGann. According to local archivists and environmentalists, this area has had a reputation as a site of scientific and botanical interest in the past. However, due to violent storm damage earlier this year some of the large poplars were partially felled and general neglect over the years has left several areas of the woodland particularly unattractive and strewn with litter and debris. Consolidation and other improvements will hopefully raise its status and profile in the community and provide an educational and environmental focus for local schools, naturalists, botanists and other interested groups and individuals in Chorlton & Whalley Range. With the assistance and support of the local council and the Scarman Trust, some funding and local assistance are currently being sought to help finance and develop the regeneration project.
