Good will to all people?....and the environment? |
Instead of a time of good will Christmas can often be a time of unthoughtful excess, ardent consumerism, a time where the environment can get forgotten in favour of expensive presents, lots of food and excessive energy use. People as well as the environment are forgotten. Workers in developing countries, many working in sweat shops, are busy trying to meet the ‘needs’ of the west as we demand bigger and better presents, much of the time not thinking what conditions they have been produced in and whether the people producing them have been given a fair wage for their work. There are many organisations that are working hard to promote a more ethical and environmentally friendly approach to Christmas and they provide a real alternative to the modern, consumerist and wasteful approach. Ask yourself what is important to you at Christmas and then ask if the waste and the suffering that the peak in our consumption causes is not too high a price.
Groundwork , Salford and Trafford in partnership with Old Trafford Waste and Recycling Group have produced a ‘Guide to a green Celebration’. It includes all you need to know about saving money, energy and the planet over different celebrations. The booklet is being delivered to homes throughout Old Trafford in December.
