Hockerton Housing Project Tour |
Thank you to all of our volunteers who attended the CAT courses and the Hockerton Housing Project tour in October and November. From the feedback we have received the community chest sponsored training has been a huge success! AfSL plan to hold a volunteer evening in the near future (keep an eye on our website for the date and time) This will enable people who couldn’t make it to the training to find out more, and of course to meet other AFSL volunteers.
We still have places on our AfSL In House Training for volunteers, contact us for further details. The tour took place on Thursday 10th November and lasted a full day: Background Over the last seven or so years, the Hockerton Housing Project (HHP) has established itself as an exemplar of sustainable development, locally and nationally, providing a unique 'real-life' experience of living sustainably. One of the main aims of HHP is to encourage building professionals and others to become interested in sustainable development and lifestyles. Although reading about projects such as HHP can tell you a lot, there is nothing like seeing things for real, getting a direct sense of what it is like, and meeting people face-to-face who are doing it. Action For Sustainable Living would therefore like to offer a limited number of tour places to our volunteers. So that they can experience sustainable living first hand and pass this information on to others. Over the last five years HHP have fine-tuned tours of the project to meet the needs of as many people as possible. To this end the tour should last between 2 and 3 hours; however this can be adapted depending on what AFSL volunteers would like. What does the tour include? The tours cover low energy/ passive solar house design, renewable energy systems, autonomous water services, sustainable transport, and issues involving living and working together. HHP standard site tour includes; tour of the project site highlighting key elements of landscaping, tour of one of the project members houses, slide presentation showing history of the development, a small exhibition, and light refreshments. This normally takes approximately three hours. The following subjects will usually be covered:
How much will it cost? Action for Sustainable Living applied for a grant to community chest, in order to fund volunteer training. Therefore the cost of the tour and minibus transport will be paid for by us. However any further expenses e.g. childcare and lunch are not included. If this is a barrier to you joining the tour then please contacts us to discuss this with us in confidence. What are the travel arrangements? A minibus will depart from Chorlton and take the group directly to the HHP, after the tour you will be brought back to the pick up point. The minibus has facilities for disabled passengers. The journey should take approx 2 hours. Special requirements? If you have any special travel or tour requirements please tell us. When is the tour and how long will it last? Thursday 10th November. You should expect to return to (Chorlton) at approx 18:00hrs. How do I book a place? Places are limited so please contact Josh to book your place: 0845 108 6242 or [email protected] 7th October 2005 |
