AfSL volunteers have put in a funding bid to Community Chest/Learning Chest to run a Permaculture Summer Programme for our growing network of volunteers, and for community activists, residents and workers in our area.

Permaculture means “permanence in culture”, and the UK network is part of a growing international permaculture community, active in over 100 countries. Permaculture is built upon three ethics, which guide development and practise:

  • care of the earth;
  • care of (all) people;
  • fair shares (or sharing our surplus).

The process of design is central to permaculture practise, and is applied to develop systems for sustainable, self-reliant communities. Well designed permaculture systems are life supporting, and range from relatively simple house and garden applications, to complex neighbourhood scale developments.

The proposed programme will include

  • 12 Hour Introductory Course
  • 72 Hour Permaculture Design Course
  • talks and presentations
  • visits to established permaculture projects in the Region.

The Programme will provide participants with an in depth understanding of the concepts, ethics and principles of permaculture, along with tools and techniques for applying permaculture design, to improve their quality of life, and develop sustainability and self-reliance in their neighbourhoods. The courses will be facilitated by local permaculture teachers and practitioners who are recommended by the British Permaculture Association

The Programme aims to:

  • increase confidence and capacity by sharing knowledge, skills and access to resources;
  • improve the physical environment by providing core design skills that enable local people to transform underused spaces into socially, ecologically and economically productive neighbourhood resources;
  • strengthen neighbourhoods, and empower communities by promoting sustainability and community self-reliance;
  • build mutually supportive networks by linking participants with other people in the city / region / nation / world, who are engaged in similar work activities
  • raise levels of education, and increase employability by providing quality vocational and pre-vocational Open College Federation accredited courses, and a learning pathway to a permaculture diploma
  • improve health and build a sense of belonging, by engaging local people in practical Earth healing and spiritual healing activities, such as community food growing activities for example
