  • 8 July: SUST07 Eco Fashion Show, The Lowry Centre, Salford Quays.  FREE! Part of World Co-op day.  Contact: email [email protected] or phone 0845 634 4510

  • 1 July, 12 noon: One Hour No Power.  If you are concerned about the effects of climate change, simply turn everything off for an hour. That is one hour with no cars, mobile phones, televisions, household appliances or any other non-vital equipment. We would also like as many businesses as possible to join in and publicly show their commitment to tackling climate change. Effectively, we want to unplug the world for an hour or at least your little bit of it.  It is up to you how you spend the hour. You could hold a sponsored event for your favourite environmental group, take to the roads on your bike, hug a tree (while stocks last), write your personal green action plan for the coming year or even hold a John and Yoko style love-in.

  • 23 June, 10.30am: Action on Excess Packaging, at a supermarket near you.  Fed up with filling your bin with unnecessary and unsustainable packaging? Sign up to discard unsustainable packaging at the checkout or simply to deliver it back to its' supermarket "source" in the area.  This action on excess packaging and producer responsibility is being led by Friends of the Earth.  Contact: For further info, or if you want to participate, send an email , stating which supermarket you are likely to be visiting on the day of action, to [email protected]

  • 18 June, 6pm: Free screening of Nuts in May (Mike Leigh, 1976), Lecture Theatre 2.01, Mabel Tylecote building, Metropolitan University, All Saints campus, Oxford Road.  Introduced by Sam Grey of Research Enterprise Development.  Followed by discussion and debate. Part of the environmental trauma series.  Presented in conjunction with MMU and People and Planet.

  • 16 June, 2-5pm: Centenary Garden Opening and Green Gathering, Centenary Garden, Northumberland Road, Old Trafford.  An event to celebrate the official opening of the garden, and all things green in Old Trafford.  Local residents, Seymour Park Primary School and Parks and Countryside have worked closely with Groundwork to develop the designs.  Come along and find out more about the project and how local groups have been working to make Old Trafford greener.  There will be lots of activities, including entertainment, food, arts, face painting, circus skills, raffle.  Make your own hanging basket for free; get free lightbulbs, fairtrade food, thermometers and more.  Contact: email [email protected] or phone 0161 220 100.

  • 10-12 May, Social Technologies Summit, .  Part of Futuresonic 2007.  Includes talks on culture and climate change, followed by a network meeting for Environment 2.0 - a new international initiative seeking to explore the sustainability of future arts and technologies. It is a part of a 3 year project by Futuresonic seeking to minimise the environmental impact of the Futuresonic festival and also to explore broader issues connecting Futuresonic's interest in mobile and social technologies with the new urgency surrounding climate change.

  • 14 May, 10.30am-4.30pm: Capitalism, Environment and Democracy, University.  One day symposium to mark the launch of the new Society and Environment Research Group.  The symposium will focus on the connections between capitalism, environmental change and democratic decision making about our collective use of the non-human world.   • 19 May, 10am-5pm: Climate Change: information for action, Methodist Central Hall, Oldham Street, .  Suggested donation: £5 (lunch not included) - just turn up on the day.   Sessions include: The Climate Change Bill: what it says, what it should say The Science of Climate Change: basic and advanced Climate Models: how much can computers tell us? Media and Climate Change: are newspapers & TV doing their job? Aviation: sustainable or just plane stupid? Decentralised Energy: how much would it help? Non-Violent Direct Action: what can it achieve? Biofuels: will they make things better or worse?

  • 20 May, 4.30pm: Finding harmony in difference, St John's Hall, St John's Rd, Old Trafford, M16 7GX. Fair Trade cafe & produce, followed by harmony singing at 5pm. Come to listen, or join in with the singing! This is the culmination of the singing workshops led by Faith Watson, of Singing for Larks. We will be singing songs from all over the world. Free entry.   • 21-25 May: Walk to School WeekFocusing on reducing the pollution caused by driving to school.  You can download a poster, so you can promote the week in your school, pharmacy, health centre, library - wherever you think parents and children might see it!

  • 21-27 May, National Vegetarian Week.  Campaign to educate and inform people about the nature of a vegetarian diet.  235 Club, Watson Street, M3 4LP is offering 50% off vegetarian starters and main courses, all through the week.

  • 7 May, 10am-4.30pm: Change the Dream symposium, Nexus, Dale Street, M1 1JW.  £10 (£5 unwaged). Explores the link between environmental sustainability, social justice and spiritual fulfilment, using video clips from some of the world’s most respected thinkers, inspiring short films, and leading edge information on the state of the planet and its people.  Gain a new insight into the opportunity we have to shape the direction of our world with our everyday choices and actions.   • 28 March, 7.30pm: Solving Climate Change? Friends Meeting House, Mount Street, .  Suggested donation £1. Will set out, quickly, the huge challenges we face in trying to avert runaway climate change; explain and critique some of the "technological solutions" being proposed ( e.g. geo-sequestration, biofuels, carbon offsetting, nuclear energy); explain the current international framework (UNFCCC and Kyoto) and things that might replace it; explain Contraction and Convergence and offer time for people to put alternative points of view.  Contact: [email protected]

  • 22 March, 21.00-14.00: Sound Impact, MMUnion K2 nightclub, Oxford Road, .  £3 before 23.00, £4 after.  AfSL and MMU People & Planet are teaming up to put on 's first '100%Eco' club night The night includes a range of top local DJs playing in two rooms; green drinks from local, organic and ethical suppliers; carbon offsetting contributions for energy usage, transport of people and drinks; a low impact promotional campaign; plus it will kick start MMUnion's own permanent waste recycling facility.  Organisers say "We're not trying to preach to the converted – the night's for everyone.   • 11 to 18 March: Real Nappy Week, Raising awareness of the environmental impact of disposable baby nappies and informing parents about the availability and convenience of modern washable nappies and nappy laundry services.

  • 10 March, 7.30pm-9.30pm: Fairtrade Fashion Show, Timperley Methodist Church, Stockport Rd, Timperley.  Many of the Clothes which are being modelled will be available for purchase on the evening along with a wide variety of stalls selling Fairtrade goods.  Café Corner, a new Fairtrade coffee shop based at Timperley Methodist Church, will be open for a variety of Fairtrade coffees, teas and snacks.   • 26 December - 2 January: Festival of Winter Walks.  The Ramblers’ Association’s annual festival of walks open to everyone, with many hundreds of walks happening across England, Scotland and Wales.

  • 27-28 January: Big Garden Birdwatch.  Take part in the world's biggest bird survey. Just watch the birds in your garden or local park for an hour and help us learn more about the birds in the UK's gardens

  • 2 - 17 September: Organic Fortnight Aims to encourage those new to organic food and drink to try it. The aim is to appeal to as broad a public as possible, with a particular focus on younger families and rapidly growing numbers of 'foodie' consumers.  Hundreds of events across the country, from free tasting to organic farmers' markets.  Tell us about any events as soon as possible.
  • 1 - 30 September: Farmers' Market Month Reviving the traditional and friendly way to shop by encouraging local producers to sell their own produce.  The 'Make Yours a Local Lunch' element within the overall campaign, encourages farmers' markets to show customers the great range of foods on offer, and introduce local cafés, hotels, restaurant and pubs to this wealth of produce too. There will be information at the markets and farm shops about how far the food has travelled - customers will be pleased to find that in some cases this is a few thousand metres, not a few thousand miles
  • 15-17 September: Clean Up the World Weekend Volunteers from a range of organisations take to their local parks, beaches, forests and waterways with the common goal of cleaning up, fixing up and conserving their local environment.  City Council is a registered member, contact: [email protected]
  • 16-24 September: Welcome to Walking week The Ramblers' Association's annual festival of walks designed as a gentle introduction to walking.  The festival is an easy and pleasant way to introduce people to the joys and benefits of walking, with many of the walks being short, easy and suitable for families with children.  To find walks near you visit the Ramblers' Association website, or call 020 7339 8500
  • 22 September: In Town, Without My Car! Town centre streets across Europe close to traffic, and open up solely for people to enjoy walking, cycling, street theatre, live music, dancing, public art and children's play areas. In : St Mary's Gate, Cross Street and Corporation Street will be closed between 11am and 3pm.  AfSL will be in the main tent, offering people the chance to measure there own eco footprint, and get a free lifestyle eco check-up.  There will be  providing an exhibition detailing emission levels from a variety of vehicles. Schoolchildren will create eco feet and then demonstrate a walking bus (Tel: 0161 953 2573)
  • 23 September, 11am-2pm: Chorlton Food Festival, St Clements church, Chorlton.  A celebration of local food. Everyone is welcome. There will be activities for the whole family as well as lots of delicious food of course!  AfSL will have a stall at the event, and will be running workshops helping people to calculate their eco footprint, as well as a recycling game for children.
  • 25 September - 1 October: Farm Animal Week Aims to get consumers thinking more about the food we buy, the animals it comes from and to shop with animal welfare in mind.  Show your support by choosing products with the Freedom Food logo.  Website has a list of where you can buy.
  • 1-31 October: Restaurants Against Hunger Month Restaurants around the country will be giving their customers the chance to dine out against hunger and make a difference to the lives of the world's hungry by making an optional donation when they pay the bill, and also with special menus, events, promotions, parties, auctions, lotteries and raffles all taking place during the month.  Website has a list of participating restaurants.
  • 14 - 20 August: National Allotments Week Promoting awareness and availability of allotments both locally and nationally as well as showing the public and the local authorities the strength of support and interest for the heritage of allotment culture.   • 17-23 July: National Cruelty-Free Week Aims to inform the public that animals are still used for the testing of cosmetics and household products.  The campaign asks consumers to look out for the BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) rabbit and stars logo; the most reliable 'kite mark' for beauty and household products that are genuinely not tested on animals. Individuals are holding 'cruelty-free makeover' evenings to encourage friends and family to ditch their animal tested products.  You can also spread the 'Go Cruelty-Free' message by contacting us for FREE copies of our Little Book of Cruelty-Free, which lists cosmetics and household product manufacturers who don't test on animals.  For more information, please contact the BUAV for a FREE National Cruelty-Free Week Fundraising Activities Pack by emailing or by phoning 0207 619 6974

  • 24 June - 2 July: Use Your Paths Week The Ramblers' Association wants to see more people out walking, more people discovering the delights of a walk in town or country and more people pressuring their councils to improve this unique national asset.  Groups walk finder

  • 24th June - HEAT at Exodus Festival - Hulme Park - COME AND GET INVOLVED

    HEAT won £2000 as NEA/defra Award Scheme '06 - Regional Winners.
    NEA Officials will attend Exodus Festival to judge HEAT's award project.
    We could go on to become National Winners - and claim an additional £3000 prize.
    We welcome all ideas and contributions in making this an event to remember!

  • 17-18 June: FEAST! Picnic by the Lake - Platt Fields park lakeside, Wilmslow Rd, Fallowfield, Sat 7 - 10.30pm; Sun 1 - 5pm. To celebrate midsummer, the Streets Ahead team are planning a mass picnic round the lakeside, with entertainment from Britain and Europe. Bring your own picnic or buy food from around the world - or both... Sit at tables provided or on your own blanket on the grass. They’ll provide a feast for your eyes and ears with tabletop entertainment, musical serenades, circus, street theatre, activities and games. Bring candles, tablecloth and a bunch of flowers. And if you feel like it, come dressed up, tell stories or play music, sing – make your picnic area a must-see for others!Sat

  • 12th-15th June National School Grounds Week 2006 A celebratory week of focused activity encouraging schools and early years settings in all parts of the UK to get outside and make the most of the opportunities for play and learning offered there

  • 5th June World Environment Day Considered by many to be the most important event on the environmental calendar.

  • Throughout May Walk in the Woods Take a walk among trees this May - for the sake of your health. The Tree Council's Walk in the Woods festival offers plenty of opportunities to have fun while doing yourself some good, whether it's heading out with family and friends or taking part in a whole host of events throughout the UK .
  • 7-13 May: Compost Awareness Week - International initiative to showcase compost production and demonstrate compost use. Aims to encourage the public and business communities alike to take action to support composting at all scales and to use composts
  • 13 May: World Fair Trade Day - celebrate Fair Trade Organisations by buying more Fair Trade goods through Fair Trade stores, Fair Trade catalogues and campaign groups, and encouraging conventional companies to sell more Fair Trade products.1-8 April: Welly Week - Support Garden Organic, Europe's largest gardening charity, by wearing wellies!

  • 16th-22nd September 2005: European Mobility Week (EMW) - the central theme is "clever commuting" - promoting sustainable trips to workplaces and schools by encouraging alternative modes of transport.  is supporting EMW, and Bury is participating.  As part of EMW, 22nd September is International Car Free Day - and Stockport are participating, and Bury is supporting.  Planned events include a solar and wind-powered all human green circus in Bridge Street West, on 18th September.  AfSL will be helping people find out more about green ways of getting around.
